If God Told You To Try Again, Would You Obey?

A single phrase can hit like thunder in the quiet: “Try again.” When I heard it, I felt hopeful and terrified at the same time because I knew exactly what God was pointing to, the thing I’ve attempted before and watched fall apart. If you’ve ever felt the Holy Spirit pull you back toward a calling you’d rather leave behind, you’re not alone, and you’re not crazy for feeling conflicted.

I open Luke 5:4–7 and sit with Peter’s honest response after a night of empty nets. He has every reason to quit, explain, and protect himself from more disappointment, yet he says the line that changes everything: “But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” That story becomes a blueprint for what it means to trust God’s word when your own experience argues back. We also talk about how God confirms His direction, sometimes through repeating themes, Scripture, sermons you weren’t even searching for, and friends who echo the same message at the exact right time.

From there, I break down the three things a “try again” assignment requires: obedience, faith, and movement. Obedience means I do what God says and let Him carry the results. Faith means I trust what I can’t see yet, grounded in Hebrews 11:1. Movement means I take real steps even when fear and anxiety try to freeze me. A Whisper Of Hope And Dread

If you've ever heard the Holy Spirit whisper something to you that fills you with hope and dread at the same time, then today's episode is for you. Hi, I'm Colette Marie, host of the podcast Position for Purpose Conversations. It is for the woman of faith who struggle to see God in her story and need to be reminded that God has a plan to use her hardest places for his plan and his purpose, according to Romans 8 28. Try again. That's what I heard deep in my spirit one morning about two weeks ago. In my sleep, I just heard that. And I said, try again. And I heard the Lord says, try again, try again. And immediately, honestly, I felt I felt fear because I remember saying to the Lord, I've tried this thing so many times, and so many times it has not worked out. Because when he said try again, even though I questioned and felt fear, I knew what he was talking about. It was something that he told me to do some years ago, and I've been trying and trying and have not been successful at it. So hear him telling me in this morning that I had to try again. I felt these emotions. I felt I felt sadness, I felt fear, I felt excited at the same time, I felt hopeful at the same time. And I remember when I said to him that Lord, I've done this so many times, and it hasn't worked

Remember Peter And The Nets

out. And my sister, all I could hear was, remember Peter? Of course, in the moment, remember Peter, which one of the events? And immediately it just clicked. When he said to Peter to let down the net, what did Peter say? And this is where I'm going to read for you that passage of scripture because I think it just gives us context. It's from Luke 5, 4 to 7, and it says, When he Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Now go out where it is deeper and let down your nets to catch some fish. Master Simon replied, We worked hard all night and didn't catch a thing. But if you say so, I'll let the nets down again. And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear. A help, a shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. So when he said, Remember Peter, the part that stood out to me again was that when Peter said, But if you say so, I'll let the nets down again. So Peter started with the excuse like I did. Daddy, I've been doing this thing so long and nothing has happened. Why do it again? And so I remember getting up in the morning and the thing was so fresh in my mind. Like I had to go to the scriptures just to read it. Right? And it also reminded me, later on, it would have reminded me about Peter walking on water when the Lord bid him to come and he came out.

Three Requirements Obedience Faith Movement

And so God requires God requires obedience. What is it has he told you to do? What has he told you to try again? What what is he calling you to do? And your response, I've tried it so many times and it hasn't worked. Why try again? Or Lord, I don't have what it takes. How could I do this thing? But it requires three things from us. It requires obedience. Because when God tells us to do something, it would be better for us to obey, do, and the thing doesn't work out because then it is all on him rather than not doing it any at all. Because then it is disobedience, and there are lessons to be learned in that, and that's what I'm learning. That there are lessons to being obedient. We have to take him at his word. If he says try again, if he says start that business, do that thing, do that thing, whatever it is that thing is that he's talking to you about. Trust that now is the right time for you to do it. Trust that now is the right time. Two, it it is gonna take faith. It's going to take faith. Faith says, Hebrews 11:1 states, now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Further down in in Hebrews, it talks about the faith that we would need, because without it it is impossible to please God. And so we have to believe that if He said it, He has a plan, He has a way out. So, one, it requires obedience, two, it requires faith. Three, it requires movement, and movement means despite how I am feeling, I am going to do this thing. Despite how I might be feeling fear, I might be feeling anxiety, or I downright don't want to do it. But because you say, Father, do it, I am going to do it. And so I remember as he told me to do it, what ensued over the couple days and weeks was that I started hearing these sermons, and this is not me going to search for them. This is just the things that when I go to watch something, I go to read something or in my devotional, these are the things that are coming back with the same story with Peter. And I said, Lord, I remember one morning just standing up and saying, Lord, you're speaking so loudly right now that I have no choice but to know that you're speaking and to be obedient to what you're saying. And that for me meant a whole deal because it felt like God was just saying, even though you may feel this way, I know.

Confirmation Signs And Taking Action

Let's put one caveat. This thing that the Lord has wants me to retry is not something that I want to retry. I'm gonna be honest. Only because I failed so many times at it that I don't want to do it again. So I know I would not be telling myself that I should do it again. And sometimes that's what happens. The enemy wants you to think that it's you're thinking this by yourself and this is what you want. But you have to know that you know that you know that this is God speaking, especially when you see him confirming the thing that he wants you to do. And I remember I'm so excited working at it because I started, I got my laptop and I started doing, I started doing the research, and I have all the materials of what he wants me to do. And I felt so excited about it because I could see the evidence, I could see that this is what he wants me to do, the passion that I feel about the thing. I don't know how it's gonna work out, but I'm believing that it is going to work out, that I'm gonna cast my net one more time, and I'm going to receive more than I thought that I would. Right? And so that's my encouragement to you today to put down your net, put the net on the other side, that you may need help to catch that catch that you are going to get, just like I think I'm gonna need help, right? So have the faith to believe that God is able, have the trust to know that he stands by his word, and then you have to apply movement to it, apply movement to it so we can trust, we can have faith. But if we don't move, we don't see what God has promised. And that is important because the testimony is not just for yourself alone or for myself alone, it's for others to see, it's so that we can say to others, this is what the Lord spoke deep into my spirit one night at 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. And it was the dialogue I had in the conversation. This is what he has said, this is what I said to my friends, and everyone came back. I remember talking to one of my friends, Don. And immediately Don said, You remember Peter? What happened? And I waited until she finished, and I said, My friend, that's exactly the scripture that the Lord gave me to remember what he did. Because he first doubted, but then he acted on invoidance and said, Lord, because you say this is what I'm going to do. So perchance someone is encouraging you. You shared what the Lord has told you to do with someone, and they're confirming it, and you see the signs, God is confirming it elsewhere, but you may still be afraid to move. And I understand, especially if it's something that He's asking you to do again that you've already tried. And no moving is hard. But take it from me. I had to get away from that place and to do it. Because at the end of the day, it is He alone who is going to get the glory from this. And if I fall flat on my face, I have to trust that His grace is going to lift me up, and then it's all on Him. But I have to play my part, so I'm pulling out all the stops to do this thing, and in subsequent weeks, I'll tell you what it is. But right now I am just rebuilding it,

Go Full Speed Ahead And Prayer

rebuilding it with God. Allow Him to lead me, to direct my path, because at the day I want to know that I walked in obedience, not in disobedience. So I'm going at this full speed ahead. That's my encouragement to you today to go full speed ahead to what he has called you, what he has whispered to you is because he knows that's what is best for you right now in this season. Right now in this season. So if you're feeling fearful, if you're feeling doubtful, here's a prayer that I'll be praying over you today, my sister. Lord, I thank you that you love my sister the same way you love me, that you're giving her another chance, another opportunity, that you're telling her to do something that she's never done before. But in order that she will have to trust you, that you're able to see her through, that her faith, even as small as a mustard seed, is able to move mountain so she can put her faith in you and know that you will sustain her. That even as she contemplates moving you, help her to understand that as you as she moves, that you will light her path and that you'll take her through one day at a time, one step at a time. We will build the spirit of fear, Lord, because your word says you've not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of us all men. And so we ask of your spirit of delivering God that where there is fear, that you will put trust almighty God, because it will spring up in her like a wellspring almighty God. Lord, send your word, send her to your word that will encourage her, Lord God, that will confirm what you've already said, Almighty God, and if she needs further confirmation, just as you did with Gideon and the fleece, Almighty God. Show up for her, Lord, just as you did with me, show up for her, Father, in the name of Jesus. I thank you for her. I thank you for what you're calling her to build, what you're calling her to rebuild, where you're sending her, Almighty God. Because at the end of the day, it's all for your glory and for your honor. I bless you and I honor you in Jesus' name. Amen and amen.
